He knows the folder is called misc and he knows exactly what is in it and he knows how many clicks it takes to get there. Three.
Four years and two months old. Eleven messages in the chain, and he can quote parts of it, and he has never once told anybody that.
It ended a thing he had built. The specifics do not matter as much as people think: there was a decision, and it was framed as a restructure, and two of the eleven messages contain sentences that were not true, and he could prove that, and there was never any forum in which proving it would have changed anything.
Nobody was a monster. That is what makes it stick. One of them still sends a message at Christmas and he replies, warmly, and means it, mostly.
He has reread it maybe forty times in four years. Never for information. He knows what it says. He reads it the way you press a bruise, and every time he closes it he feels slightly worse and slightly more certain that he was right, and both of those are true at once.
The sentence is not they treated me badly. It is: four years of my life were decided by eleven emails and I still cannot make it mean anything.
You know that folder. It might be a message, or a letter, or a conversation you can replay word for word. Somebody made a decision that took something from you, and you have kept the evidence, and you visit it, and you have never once been able to work out what it was all for.
Two intentions, kept in two columns
There is a sentence at the end of Genesis, said by a man to the brothers who sold him, and almost everybody flattens it into something softer than it is.
But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.Genesis 50:20
Look at the structure. Two subjects and two verbs, held apart. Ye thought evil. He does not withdraw that or soften it or say they meant well really. It stays on the page, named, forty years later, in front of them.
But God meant it unto good. A separate intention, belonging to somebody else, running at the same time.
Joseph never merges the two columns. He does not say the brothers were secretly instruments and therefore fine. He says both things were real, and the second one did not cancel the first one, and he was able to live with both in the same sentence.
You are inside an intention of God that has been running the whole four years alongside a decision made by people who wrote two untrue sentences. That is what the written word says over you and not a diplomatic framing I have chosen, and the Holy Spirit who has been at work in you since that chain arrived is the evidence that God's column was never empty while you were reading theirs.
Watch what that does to the arithmetic you run three clicks into a folder called misc. If there are two columns, then eleven emails is information about what people meant. It is not the whole account of those four years, and it never had the standing to become that.
He does not tell you what the good was
Here is the second thing, and it is where this could turn into the thing that has been done to you already.
People will tell you what the good was. They will point at something in your life now and say, see, if that had not happened. Scripture never handed anybody that script, and His Spirit does not speak it either. And you have wanted to punch a wall, quietly and politely, more than once, because a person who says that has taken the two columns and mashed them into one, and turned the untrue sentences into a service somebody did you.
Joseph never does that. He knows what the good was in his case, and it is enormous and specific and he names it, and the text never suggests he was owed that knowledge or that anybody else gets it.
So nothing here will tell you what your four years were for. Scripture says God wastes nothing and that nobody can trace out what He is doing, and it lets you hold both columns without collapsing them.
You have been carried through all four of those years, including the forty times you opened that folder, and the carrying did not stop while you were reading. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work in you rather than waiting for you to reach a healthier attitude about an email.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a comforting thought and an open laptop. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a man has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not reread forty times in silence. And the thing in the way is not the person who sends a Christmas message. It is a sentence: I still cannot make it mean anything. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a man with any authority three clicks into a folder. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how right you were.
If this has taken you somewhere darker than anger, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The laptop, the folder called misc, three clicks.
Lift both hands off the keyboard and turn them over. Actually do it, palms up, with the chain open on the screen if it is open, because your hands have been the thing that keeps going back and they are going to hold nothing for a minute.
Say out loud the thing that ended. Plain words, the flattest in the house. Not the version prepared for a tribunal that is never going to sit.
Then say one sentence naming what God meant. Not what the good was, because nobody knows that and nothing here is going to invent it, and God has never required a man to produce a meaning before he is allowed to put something down. Just what God meant. One sentence, then close the laptop.
You are not a man whose four years were decided by eleven emails, you are a man inside a second intention that has been running the entire time. That is the word's account of those years rather than my kind version of them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been at work in you through every one of the forty readings.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands still open. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than however right you feel tonight. What God does next with your life, and whether you ever understand any of it, is His to decide, and He is not asking you to make it mean something.
- Message I have read forty times, you are not the last word on those years. Joseph said you thought evil against me but God meant it unto good, and he kept both halves, and you are eleven emails in a folder called misc.
- Demand that I make it mean something before I put it down, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture lets Joseph name what they meant without collapsing it into what God meant, and I am allowed to hold two columns.
- Lord, You meant it unto good and I am inside that intention tonight with my hands off the keys. I thank You, because Your Spirit has worked in me through four years and forty readings, and I am closing this without a verdict and without deleting it either.
