The Run That Closed

He still goes down there. Not every day. Two or three times a week, and he tells himself it is for the walk.

The water looks exactly the same. That is the part that gets people who have never worked a place like this. It looks the way it looked when he was nineteen and being shouted at, and the way it looked at thirty when he could read that piece of it better than anybody, and the way it looked last year before the notice went up.

Closed. There were meetings and a consultation and a period where everybody said what they thought, and the science was mostly agreed on, and the outcome was never in any real doubt from about eight months in.

Nineteen seasons. He was good at it. That is not vanity, it is trade. Two other men could do what he did on that stretch and one of them is dead.

Nobody is coming to take the skill off him. That is what nobody says out loud. He has a body of knowledge, precise and specific and hard won, about a piece of water that no longer needs anybody to know it. It is like being fluent in a language and standing in an empty country.

The sentence comes when he is standing there with his hands in his pockets. Not I miss the work. It is: nineteen years of learning something, for nothing.

You know that sentence. It might be a trade that went, or a skill nobody needs, or years of expertise in a thing that has been reorganized out of existence. There is a piece of knowledge in you that cost a great deal and now has nowhere to go, and standing in front of what used to need it is a specific kind of quiet.

Not in vain, and the question is to whom

There is a sentence at the very end of the longest chapter Paul ever wrote about the resurrection, and it lands with a thud after all that height.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.1 Corinthians 15:58

Not in vain in the Lord. Those last three words are doing all the work and almost everybody drops them. He is not saying the labor will produce results you can point at. He is not promising an industry stays open or that anybody keeps needing what you know. He is saying that labor lands somewhere other than in the visible outcome, and the somewhere is a Person.

That is a different claim from the one you have been testing your nineteen years against.

You are a man whose labor is not empty, and it is not empty because of who it went into rather than what came of it. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing I chose for a man on a shoreline, and the Holy Spirit who was with you at nineteen being shouted at is the evidence that none of those seasons went into nothing.

Watch what that does to the arithmetic you run with your hands in your pockets. If the labor lands in Him, then a closed run is information about a stock assessment and a decision made in a room a long way from here. It is not a verdict on nineteen seasons, and it never had the standing to become one.

Nobody here will tell you why it closed

Here is the second thing, and it is where this could go badly wrong and will not.

There will be people who tell you what God was doing with the closure. Making room. Getting you ready. Teaching you not to hold things too tightly. Every one of those is said by somebody with a job, and none of them is in the text.

Scripture does not explain your closure. It says God wastes nothing and that no man can find out the work He is doing. Those two together are the whole honest offer and they are enough to stand on at the edge of a run that is finished.

You have been carried through every one of the nineteen seasons and through the two years since, and the carrying was not tied to whether the water stayed open. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit who was at work in you out there rather than waiting for a better set of circumstances to start.

There is something worth saying plainly, because this is exactly where a message like this could turn into a push and it will not. Nothing here is telling you to retrain, or to find a new use for what you know, or to see this as a beginning. If nobody ever asks you a question about that water again you have not stepped one inch outside anything God is doing, because His work in you was never a use case.

This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm thought on a cold shore. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a man has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not thought about two or three times a week with your hands in your pockets. And the thing in the way is not the consultation and it is not the science. It is a sentence: nineteen years of learning something, for nothing. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.

You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a man with any authority standing at the edge of a closed run. Scripture gives the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how much of yourself was behind them.
