Time RedeemedRomans 8:28

The Needle I Put Down In March

This message is for an older woman with a quilt she stopped piecing in March of a year she calls the wasted year, still folded in a cloth bag under the bed

The bag is a pillowcase, if she is honest, and it has been under that bed for a long time.

Inside: nineteen finished blocks, a folded length of backing, a roll of wadding still in its plastic, and a needle pushed into a scrap of calico with about four inches of thread still on it. She left it threaded. That is the detail she cannot get past. A woman who intends to stop does not leave a needle threaded.

She stopped in the March. She could tell you the week.

That year has a name in her house, though nobody says it out loud any more. It was the year of two funerals and the flooding and the business her son lost, all in about seven months, and by the end of it there was no version of her that could sit and piece a quilt.

Nineteen blocks. It was going to be for a granddaughter who is now twenty-three and married and has never known there was a quilt.

The sentence is not I should finish it. It is: that whole year is a hole in my life, and here is the proof of it in a pillowcase.

You know that bag. It might be a quilt, or a half decorated room, or a box of something you were making for somebody. There is an object somewhere in your house that stops at a date, and the date has a name, and the object has become the evidence in a case you have been quietly making against a whole year of your life.

The most misquoted verse in the book, read slowly

There is a verse that gets said to people at funerals and it does more harm than almost any other sentence in Scripture, because it gets said fast and it gets said wrong.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.Romans 8:28

Read it slowly, because the words are precise and the misquote is not. It does not say all things are good. It does not say your year was good, or that the funerals were good, or the flooding, or your son's business. Nobody in that verse is asked to call a hard thing good.

It says all things work together. Which is a claim about a weave rather than about any single thread. And a person who has spent her life piecing knows exactly what that means: a block on its own is nothing much, and some of the fabric in a good quilt comes out of things that were ruined.

You are inside a weave that God is working, and the year you named has never once been outside it. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing chosen for a woman on the edge of a bed, and the Holy Spirit who was with you through all seven of those months is the evidence that nothing in that year fell out of the work.

Watch what that does to the case you have been making. If the working is a weave and God is the one at it, then a needle left threaded in March is information about two funerals, a flood and a son in trouble. It is not proof of a hole in your life, and it never had the standing to become that.

Nobody here will tell you what it was for

Here is the second thing, and it is where this verse usually gets used as a weapon.

People will say the year was making you stronger. That God took those things for a reason. That in time it will all make sense. And they mean it, and it is not in the text, and it has driven a great many people away from a God they were told arranged two funerals for their benefit.

The verse says God works all things together. It does not say He sent them, and it does not tell you what the weave is going to look like, and the same chapter is entirely honest that the whole creation is groaning.

You have been carried through every month of that year, and the carrying did not pause when the needle went down. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit who was in that house through the flooding rather than waiting for a better year to come round.

There is something worth saying plainly, because this is exactly where a message like this could turn into a nudge and it will not. Nothing here is telling you to finish the quilt. Nothing is telling you to give the blocks to somebody who will. If that pillowcase stays under that bed until it is cleared out by somebody else you have not stepped one inch outside the work of God.

This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a comforting thought and a pillowcase. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud. Not carried under a bed for years. And the thing in the way is not the funerals and it is not the flood. It is a sentence: that whole year is a hole in my life. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.

You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority kneeling by a bed. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how strong your voice is.

If this has taken you somewhere darker than sadness, and there are days you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.

The breakthrough

So. The bedroom, the pillowcase, a needle still threaded from a March a long time ago.

Lay both hands flat on the folded blocks. Actually do it, palms down on the cloth, kneeling or sitting on the edge of the bed. Those hands did nineteen blocks and then set a needle down in the middle of a row.

Say out loud the name that year has in this house. Once, plainly. Not the shortened version you use when somebody asks.

Then say one sentence naming who works all things together. Not what the year was for, because nobody knows and nothing here will invent it, and God has never asked anybody to call a hard year good. Just who works. One sentence, then put the bag back or leave it out.

You are not a woman with a hole in her life, you are a woman inside a weave that God is working, and the year you named has been inside it the whole time. That is the word's account of that year rather than my kind version of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who was with you in every one of those seven months.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these out loud with your hands still on the cloth. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than however steady you feel this afternoon. What God works out of that year, and whether a single block is ever added, is His to decide, and He is not asking you to call anything good.

  1. Year I named the wasted one, you are not outside what God is working. Romans says all things work together for good, and it never says all things are good, and you are seven months of funerals and water and trouble.
  2. Case I have been making against my own life, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture makes a claim about a weave and not about a single thread, so a needle set down in March was never the proof of anything.
  3. Lord, You work all things together and my hard year has never once been outside Your hands, and I am resting on that this afternoon with both hands flat on nineteen blocks. I thank You, because Your Spirit was in this house through the flooding and both funerals, and I am putting this bag back without a verdict on it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
