The key still works. That is what she found out this morning, and she wishes she had not tried it.
It is a plywood cupboard, painted cream about four times, in the corner of a room that smells of the same floor polish it has smelled of since before her children were born. And inside, stacked the way she always stacked them: the felt board, the roll of backing cloth, a shoebox of figures with the shepherds worn thin at the edges, and a folder of song sheets that nobody has sung since the spring.
Thirty-one years. She never counted them until somebody at the closing made a little speech and counted them out loud, and even then it sounded like a number belonging to someone else.
It did not close in any dramatic way. The children got fewer. Then there were four, then two, and then one Sunday there was one, a boy who was only there because his grandmother had him for the weekend. The elders were kind. They said the word season several times. Somebody brought a cake.
She agreed with all of it. She agrees with it now. The class was not viable and she is not a foolish woman.
But she stands in that doorway with the key in her hand, and the sentence that comes is not I am sad about the children. It is: thirty-one years of talking and I have nothing to show for it.
You know that sentence. It might not be a Sunday class. It might be a marriage you poured into, or a job nobody remembers, or years of raising people who have gone their own way. Somewhere behind you there is a long stretch of work and the world's answer to it has been quiet, and the quiet has begun to sound like a verdict.
The class ended. The word did not come back.
There are two things in that cupboard and they have been the same thing in your chest since spring. I want to set them apart before anything else.
The class ended. That is true and it is not a failure of yours. Numbers went down for reasons that live in a valley and a decade and not in a woman in a doorway, and grieving it is honest, not weak.
The purpose of God did not end, and it was never the same object as the class. That is the whole of this and I am saying it in the doorway rather than saving it. What cannot be stopped is His purpose. Not the attendance, not your voice, not your years.
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.Isaiah 55:11
Now read who is doing what in that verse, because it is all in the pronouns. My word. My mouth. That which I please. Whereto I sent it. There is not a single line in it about the one who carried the word, or about whether they carried it well, or long, or to enough people. God takes the whole of the responsibility for what His word does after it leaves. He always has.
You are inside a going out of the word of God that has never once come back empty, standing in a doorway with a key in your hand, and thirty-one years of it did not lose one sentence. That is what the written word says over you and not a comfort I made up on a bad morning, and the Holy Spirit who sat in that room with you every Sunday is the evidence that none of it was ever yours to make prosper.
Watch what that does to the accounting you have been doing since spring. If the thing that keeps working is His word, then an empty room is information about a valley in a particular decade. It is not information about a woman, and it never had the right to become that.
Nothing ever depended on your seeing it
Here is the second thing, and it sets something down rather than picking it up.
Somewhere in thirty-one years you began to expect a receipt. Not from pride. From love. You wanted to see it land, and you had every right to want that, and the wanting quietly turned into a rule: if I cannot see the fruit, perhaps there was none. But God did not attach the working of His word to your line of sight.
You have been carried through every one of those thirty-one years, and the carrying never once turned on results you could count. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work in those children rather than filing a report back to the woman who taught them.
And there is something worth saying plainly, because this is exactly the place a message like this could turn into a prod and it will not. Nothing here is asking you to restart anything. Not in the fall, not ever. If that cupboard stays shut for the rest of your life you have not moved one inch outside the purpose of God, because getting inside it was never something you earned with three decades and staying inside it is not something you keep up by teaching.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm feeling in a cold room. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken, not swallowed in a doorway. And the thing in the way is not the elders and it is not the families who moved. It is a sentence: nothing to show for it. That sentence has been running your springs and summers unopposed, because nobody has ever answered it out loud, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with authority at seventy-four with a key in her hand. Scripture gives the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how steadily you said them.
If this spring has taken you somewhere darker than sadness, and there are days you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The doorway, the cream paint, the key still in your hand.
Put your free hand flat on the cupboard door. Actually put it there. It is only plywood and it is the closest thing in the room to thirty-one years, and your hand on it says what your mouth has not managed since March.
Say out loud the thing that ended. Say it plain, the way you would say it to a neighbor over a fence. Not the gracious version you gave the elders.
Then say one sentence naming what does not come back empty. Not what you might start again, because nothing here is asking you to start anything, and God has never required anybody to see fruit in order to remain inside His purpose. Just what does not come back empty. One sentence, and then let the room be quiet.
You are not a woman with nothing to show, you are a woman standing inside the going out of a word that has never returned void, not once, not in thirty-one years. That is the word's account of your life rather than mine, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has carried every sentence you ever said in that room.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hand still flat. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than the steadiness of your voice this morning. What God does next with your life, and whether that room is ever full of children again, is His to decide, and He is not asking you for a plan in this doorway.
- Locked cupboard, you are not the account of thirty-one years. Isaiah says His word does not return to Him void, and you are a plywood door with a key that still works, and He is a sender.
- Verdict that says nothing to show for it, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture says His word prospers in the thing He sent it to, so the harvest was never mine to see and never mine to produce.
- Lord, Your word has never come back empty and I am standing inside its going out this morning with my hand on a cupboard. I thank You, because Your Spirit was in that room on every one of those Sundays, and I am leaving the counting to You.
