The urn takes eleven minutes to come up to temperature and she knows that the way other people know their own phone number.
She is standing beside it with her back to the room, which is a position she has chosen carefully, because from here she can hear everything and nobody can see her face.
Out there it is going well. That is not sarcasm. It is going extremely well. There are forty-one people in a hall that used to hold nineteen, and the young woman running it is warm and funny and does the notices in half the time she ever managed, and there is a rota now, laminated, on the wall.
She started this. In her own front room, eleven years ago, with a jar of instant coffee and four people who came because they were lonely and one of them only came for the coffee.
Then the year happened. There is no need to go into it. A diagnosis, a long stretch of not being able to stand for more than a few minutes, a season where getting to the hall at all was the whole of the achievement, and by the time she was upright again somebody had, very kindly and very correctly, taken it on.
Nobody pushed her out. That is what makes it impossible to say out loud. They ask her advice. They named the Tuesday group after a phrase she used to use. They are good people and she loves them and she stands at the back with the urn because it is a job and having a job means she has a reason to be here.
The sentence comes while the water climbs. Not I miss it. It is: it turns out none of it needed me, so what was I.
You have stood at a back somewhere. It might be a family that manages without you now, or a work that carries on down the road, or a place you built where somebody else stands at the front. The specifics are yours. The question underneath is nearly everybody's, and it is asked in a voice so reasonable that you have never thought to challenge it.
Being needed and being inside are two different things
There are two things standing beside that urn, and they have been one thing in you for the whole of the last year. Let me get between them before we go any further.
Your place at the front stopped. That is true. Illness took it, not carelessness, and it went at a time when you had no capacity to argue for it, and grieving it is not self pity. It is accuracy.
The purpose of God did not stop, and it was never the same object as your place at the front. That is the whole of this and I am saying it now rather than at the end. What cannot be stopped is His purpose. Not your usefulness, not your energy, not whether anybody needs you on a Tuesday.
And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?Daniel 4:35
That is a king speaking, and it is worth remembering where he had just been. Nebuchadnezzar says this after a season of being entirely unable to function, watching a kingdom he had built carry on without him. And what he comes back saying is not I was needed after all. It is that nobody stays the hand of God, and that His doing had gone on perfectly well while he could do nothing at all. That is a man discovering the exact thing you are standing next to an urn resisting.
You are inside a doing of God that nobody has ever been able to stay, standing at the back of a hall with your hand on a tap, and the year you lost did not slow it by an hour. That is what the written word says over you and not a kindness I am offering to fill a silence, and the Holy Spirit who was at work in you all through the months you could not stand is the evidence that nothing was ever on hold.
Watch what that does to the arithmetic. If the thing that keeps moving is His, then a group that runs well without you is information about a group, and rather good information at that. It is not information about your worth, and it never had the standing to become that.
Nobody built the purpose on your shoulders
Here is the second thing, and it takes weight off.
Somewhere in eleven years you came to believe that being needed and being inside the will of God are the same fact, so that on the day you stopped being necessary you also stopped being sure you were still in it. That is why a laminated rota on a wall can hurt more than the diagnosis did.
You have been carried through every month of that year, and the carrying was never wages for being indispensable. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work in you rather than waiting to see whether you get the front of the room back.
There is something worth saying very plainly, because this is exactly where a message like this could turn into a nudge and it will not. Nothing here is telling you to take anything back, or to start a second group, or to have a conversation with anybody about your role. If you stand at that urn for the next nine years and never say a word from the front again you have not stepped one inch outside the purpose of God, because getting inside it was never something you earned by founding anything and staying inside it is not something you maintain by being needed.
And this is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a soft thought that dissolves by the time the urn boils. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not held quietly with your back to a room. And the thing in the way is not the young woman at the front, who has done nothing but her best, and it is not the illness. It is a sentence: none of it needed me, so what was I. That sentence has run this whole year unopposed because nobody has answered it out loud, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with authority holding a tea towel. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how firmly you managed to say them.
If this year has taken you somewhere darker than sadness, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The urn, the back of the hall, forty-one people behind you.
Put both hands around a warm cup. Actually do it, palms wrapped, elbows in, standing exactly where this finds you. Eleven years of holding a cup for other people is enough. Hold one now while somebody speaks over you.
Say out loud the thing that stopped. Plainly, in the flattest words you own. Not the gracious version you give people who ask if you mind.
Then say one sentence naming whose hand nobody stays. Not what you might do about your place here, because nothing here is asking you to take anything back, and God has never required anybody to be necessary in order to remain inside His purpose. Just whose hand nobody stays. One sentence, then let the room carry on without you noticing it.
You are not a woman whose usefulness ran out, you are a woman standing inside a doing of God that no illness and no rota ever had the power to interrupt. That is the word's account of your year rather than my reading of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been at the back of that hall with you every single week.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands around the cup. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than whatever strength you have on your feet today. What God does next with your life, and whether you are ever at the front of a room again, is His to decide, and He is not asking you for a plan by this urn.
- Front of this room, you are not the place where my life is decided. Daniel says none can stay His hand or ask Him what He is doing, and you are a spot on a floor, and He is a purpose.
- Sentence that says nothing needed me so I was nothing, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture says He does according to His will among all the inhabitants of the earth, so my worth was never stored in a rota.
- Lord, no one stays Your hand and I am inside what You are doing this morning with a cup in both hands. I thank You, because Your Spirit kept working all through the year I could not stand, and I am staying at this urn without calling it a demotion.
