Time RedeemedIsaiah 61:3

Seven Years And A Silent Room

This message is for a woman standing in the room where a choir she built for seven years used to rehearse, which ended in a way nobody talks about

She had to come in for something else. That is the only reason she is standing here.

The room has been repainted, which she was not expecting, and the piano has gone somewhere, and there are stacking tables where the semicircle used to be. It smells the same. That is the thing nobody can repaint.

Seven years. Thursday nights, and the extra Sundays before anything big, and the year they did the thing at the cathedral and nobody who was there has ever stopped talking about it.

Thirty-four people at the biggest. Four of whom could not sing at all when they started and two of whom can genuinely sing now.

It ended in a way she does not describe, and it is worth saying clearly why. Not because it is shameful. Because it involved other people who are still alive and still in that congregation and who would be identifiable in three sentences, and there is a kind of honesty that is really just a way of putting somebody in a corner.

So: it ended badly, and there was a meeting, and there were two versions of events, and she left, and the choir dissolved over about five months without anybody ever announcing it.

Three years ago.

The sentence in the repainted room is not I miss the singing. It is: seven years of my life ended in something ugly, and the ugly thing is the last chapter.

You know that sentence. It might be a choir, or a church, or a friendship, or a job. There is a long good stretch in your life with a bad ending stuck on the end of it, and the ending has soaked backwards through the whole thing, and you cannot get at the years any more without going through the last five months to reach them.

Somebody has to be holding the ashes

There is a line in Isaiah that gets put on cards, and on cards it is soft, and in the text it is not soft at all.

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.Isaiah 61:3

It is an exchange. That is the shape of the whole verse: a series of swaps, and every swap has somebody standing there holding the first item.

Ashes are what was left after something burned. In that world you sat in them, and you put them on your head, and everybody could see. The verse does not say the ashes were secretly beautiful. It says there is a God who takes them and puts something else in the hand.

And notice: nobody in that verse is asked to explain the fire.

You are one of the mourners that verse is addressed to, and the exchange it names has been open to you every day of the three years. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing chosen for a woman in a repainted room, and the Holy Spirit who was in that room on all seven years of Thursdays is the evidence that the good years were real and were His.

Watch what that does to the arithmetic you run standing here. If ashes are a thing God takes from a hand, then five ugly months is information about people and a meeting and two versions of events. It is not the last chapter of seven years, and it never had the standing to become that.

The ending is not the chapter it thinks it is

Here is the second thing, and it is where the weight is.

An ending is loud. It happens last, so it sits nearest, and it has the enormous advantage of being the freshest thing in the file. And a bad ending will, if nobody stops it, rewrite everything behind it. Four people who could not sing. The cathedral. The Thursday somebody's mother came for the first time in nine years. All of it starts to look, in retrospect, like the run up to a meeting.

That rewrite is not accurate and it is not God's account.

You have been carried through all seven years and through all three since, and the carrying did not become false when the ending did. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit who was at work in those thirty-four people rather than deciding, at the meeting, that the previous seven years had not counted.

There is something worth saying plainly, because this is exactly where a message like this could turn into a demand and it will not. Nothing here is telling you to forgive anybody today, or to go back, or to make peace with people who are still in that congregation. Those may come and they are not the price of anything. If you never set foot in that room again except to fetch something you have not stepped one inch outside what God is doing.

This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm thought in a repainted hall. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud. Not carried for three years without a single description. And the thing in the way is not the people, whom you are protecting even now by not naming them. It is a sentence: the ugly thing is the last chapter. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.

You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority standing between stacking tables. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how composed you sound.

If this has taken you somewhere darker than grief, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.

The breakthrough

So. The repainted room, the stacking tables, the smell that did not change.

Open both hands at about chest height. Actually do it, palms up, standing in the middle of a room where you used to stand in front of thirty-four people. There is nobody here. That is why it can be done.

Say out loud what ended. Plain words, the flattest in the house, and no names, because protecting them has been a real work of yours and it does not stop tonight.

Then say one sentence naming who gives beauty for ashes. Not what the ending was for, because nobody knows and nothing here is going to invent it, and God has never asked anybody to explain a fire before He takes the ashes. Just who gives. One sentence, then take what you came in for and go.

You are not a woman whose seven years ended in something ugly, you are a mourner in front of a God who takes ashes out of a hand and puts beauty into it. That is the word's account of those years rather than my kind version of them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who was in that room on every Thursday of them.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these out loud with your hands still open. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than however composed you are in this room. What God does with those seven years, and whether anything is ever restored between you and anybody, is His to decide, and He is not asking you for a reconciliation tonight.

  1. Silent room, you are not the ending of seven years. Isaiah says He gives beauty for ashes and the oil of joy for mourning, and you are stacking tables where a semicircle used to be.
  2. Rewrite that turns seven good years into a run up to a meeting, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture never asked anybody to explain the fire before the ashes were taken, so the ending does not get to edit what went before it.
  3. Lord, You give beauty for ashes and my hands are open in this room tonight. I thank You, because Your Spirit was here on all seven years of Thursdays and He did not stop being here in the five months it fell apart, and I am walking out holding what You put in my hands.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
