Time RedeemedPsalm 90:15

Nine Years Of Nights

This message is for a woman who gave nine years to night shifts and to caring for her mother, and who now cannot say what she has to show for any of it

Somebody at a party asked her what she had been up to and she could not answer.

Not could not think of an answer. Could not answer. There was a pause that went on about a second and a half too long, and the woman who asked, who was perfectly nice, moved on to somebody else, and she went and stood in a kitchen and drank a glass of tap water she did not want.

Nine years. Nights on a ward, four on and four off for the first six of them, and then a different pattern, and then a period where she was doing both: the shifts and the sleeping in a chair at her mother's, and a stretch in the middle she genuinely cannot recall the order of.

Her mother died in the February. That grief has its own shape and is not what this is about.

This is about the party. This is about a woman of forty-seven standing in somebody else's kitchen realizing that if you ask her what she has been doing she has nothing that sounds like a life. No progression. No house. No qualifications she added. No stories, because the stories are all about a ward at four in the morning and nobody at a party wants those.

The sentence went with her out to the car. Not I am tired. It is: nine years, and I have nothing to show anybody.

You know that sentence. It might be caring, or shifts, or a stretch where you kept a household or a family or a business upright and the keeping upright is invisible by nature. There is a chunk of your life with no external evidence in it, and somebody asks a friendly question, and you have nothing to hand them.

Somebody asked God to do the arithmetic

There is a verse in a psalm that hardly ever gets read out, and it is a request, and the request is startling.

Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.Psalm 90:15

Read what is actually being asked. Not: take the hard years away. Not: explain them. The prayer is make us glad according to them, measured against them, in proportion to them. Somebody stood in front of God and asked Him to weigh out gladness on the same scale as the hard years.

And it stands in Scripture, which means it is a prayer God does not object to. Nobody in that psalm is told they should not have asked.

You are permitted to ask God for gladness measured against nine years of nights, and that request is written into the book rather than something I invented for you. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing chosen for a woman in a car park, and the Holy Spirit who was with you at four in the morning on that ward is the evidence that those years were not spent outside His attention.

Watch what that does to the arithmetic that went with you to the car. If a request like that stands in Scripture unrebuked, then those years are on a scale rather than in a bin. They are not nothing to show, and they never had the standing to become that.

Nobody here will tell you why the nine years happened

Here is the second thing, and it is where this could turn cruel and will not.

People will explain it. They will say it was making you compassionate. That your mother needed exactly you. That God knew you could carry it. Every one of those sentences turns nine hard years into a compliment somebody paid you, and most people who say them have never done a night shift.

Scripture does not explain your nine years. It says God wastes nothing and that no man can find out what He is doing, and it hands you a prayer that assumes the years were genuinely hard.

You have been carried through every one of those nights, and the carrying did not depend on any of it being visible from outside. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit who was in that ward and in that chair beside your mother rather than waiting for a season with something to show.

There is something worth saying plainly, because this is exactly where a message like this could turn into a push and it will not. Nothing here is telling you to retrain, or to make something of the next stretch, or to start building the life you did not get to build. If the next nine years also produce nothing anybody at a party would recognize, you have not stepped one inch outside what God is doing.

This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm thought and a glass of tap water. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud. Not swallowed in somebody else's kitchen. And the thing in the way is not the woman at the party, who was being friendly. It is a sentence: I have nothing to show anybody. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.

You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority standing by a fridge with a glass in her hand. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how much you meant them.

If this has taken you somewhere darker than tiredness, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.

The breakthrough

So. Somebody else's kitchen, or your own car, or wherever this has found you.

Put both hands flat on the table in front of you and turn them over. Actually do it, palms up, empty, which is exactly the position at that party, except deliberate this time.

Say out loud the thing you could not answer. Plain words, the flattest ones in the house. Not the deflection you used at the party.

Then say one sentence naming who measures the days. Not what you are going to do with the next stretch, because nothing here is asking about the next stretch, and God has never required anybody to produce evidence of a decade in order for it to count. Just who measures. One sentence, then let your hands rest.

You are not a woman with nothing to show, you are a woman whose nine years are on a scale that God is willing to weigh gladness against. That is the word's account of those years rather than my kind reading of them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who was with you on every one of those nights.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these out loud with your hands still turned over. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than whatever is left of you after nine years. What God does next with your life, and whether any of it ever shows, is His to decide, and He is not asking you to produce evidence.

  1. Nine years of nights, you are not the sum of what I have to show. The psalm asks God to make us glad according to the days He afflicted us, and you are four on and four off on a ward, and He is the One who weighs.
  2. Question that says what have you been up to, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture puts my years on a scale rather than in a bin, so an answer that sounds like a life was never the test.
  3. Lord, You measure the days and You have never lost one of mine, and I am standing in that this morning with my hands open and empty. I thank You, because Your Spirit was on that ward at four in the morning and in that chair beside my mother, and I am asking You for gladness on the same scale.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
