It is a hardback notebook with a rubber band around it and the rubber band has gone slack and sticky, the way they do.
He found it looking for something else, which is how these things are always found, and he has been sitting on the edge of the bed with it open for eleven minutes without meaning to.
The handwriting changes over the years. That is the first thing he notices, and it is oddly moving, because you can see him getting older in the loops. Neat at the front. Rushed in the middle. Small and careful again near the end.
Learn enough Greek to read one gospel slowly. That is on page four, dated nine years back, with a tick beside it, which surprises him, because he had forgotten he did it.
Take Mum every Wednesday. No tick. She died before it became a habit.
Start a Thursday thing for the men on this estate. No tick. Twice, actually, on two different pages, two years apart, in the same words, which is the entry he cannot look at.
And then the last one. Four years ago in April. Not dramatic, not a farewell: ask about the room at the back of the community center. And after that, forty-eight blank pages, and a rubber band gone sticky.
He did ask about the room. They said yes. And then his shifts changed and his father in law came to live with them and one thing genuinely followed another, and here we are.
The sentence arrives on the edge of the bed. Not I let myself down. It is: four years of nothing. That is the record.
You have a notebook. It might be a phone note, or a drawer, or just a list you carry in your head. Somewhere you wrote down what you intended to do for God, and at some point the writing stopped, and the blank space after the last entry has become a document about your character.
Your page went blank. His did not.
There are two records in that room and they have been one record in your chest since you found the book. I want to separate them before anything else happens.
Your list stopped. That is true. There are forty-eight blank pages and no amount of gentle framing makes them written on. Some of those entries were good intentions and some were love, and none of them got done, and that is a real thing and not a lesson.
The purpose of God did not stop, and it was never the same document as your list. That is the whole of this and I am saying it before you turn another page. What cannot be stopped is His purpose. Not your follow through, not your shifts, not your handwriting getting smaller.
But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.Psalm 115:3
Notice the tense there, because everything is in the tense. Not He will do whatever He pleases, held out in front of you as a future. He hath done. Past. Completed. It is a psalm written by people surrounded by nations who kept asking where their God was, and the answer given is that He has already been doing it, throughout, including in the years that looked from the outside like nothing.
You are inside a purpose that has been executing without interruption through all four of those blank years, sitting on the edge of a bed with a slack rubber band in your fingers. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft thing I decided to offer a man with an old notebook, and the Holy Spirit who has been at work in you all four years is the evidence that the doing was never held up waiting for an entry.
Watch what that does to the accounting. If the thing that keeps moving is His, then forty-eight blank pages are information about a shift pattern and a father in law and a hard four years. They are not information about your standing before God, and they never had the authority to become that.
The list was never the covenant
Here is the second thing, and it puts something down rather than picking it up.
Somewhere along the way the notebook stopped being a help and became a ledger. Ticks on one side, silence on the other, and a running balance that you have been quietly settling against yourself every time you find the book. But God never signed that ledger. He was never a party to it. It was between you and your own expectations, which is the most punishing contract a person can hold.
You have been carried through every one of those four years, and the carrying was never conditional on a completed line. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that working in you rather than checking the book to see whether you kept up.
There is something worth saying very plainly, because this is precisely where a message like this could turn into a prod and it will not. Nothing here is telling you to pick up a pen. Nothing here is telling you to ring the community center back. If you close that book, put the band around it and never write in it again for the rest of your life, you have not moved one inch outside the purpose of God, because getting inside it was never something you achieved by writing things down and staying inside it is not something you maintain by ticking them off.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a comfortable idea to put back in a drawer. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not read silently on the edge of a bed. And the thing in the way is not the shifts and it is not your father in law, who needed a home. It is a sentence: four years of nothing, that is the record. That sentence has run this whole afternoon and a good many others, and nobody has ever answered it out loud, including you.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a man with authority holding a notebook. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how convinced you sounded saying them.
If those four years have taken you somewhere darker than regret, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The edge of the bed, the open book, the last entry dated four years ago in April.
Lay one hand open on that last written page. Actually lay it there, palm down and flat, covering your own handwriting. It is a small thing and it is exactly the right one, because your hand has been holding this book like evidence and it is going to hold it differently now.
Say out loud the thing that stopped. Plain words. Not the version you would give a friend who found you sitting here.
Then say one sentence naming who has already done whatever He pleased. Not what you are going to write next, because nothing here is asking you to write anything, and God has never required a completed list in order to keep a man inside His purpose. Just who has already done it. One sentence, then close the book or leave it open as you like.
You are not four years of nothing, you are a man inside a purpose that has been in continuous operation on every one of the pages you left blank. That is the word's account of those four years rather than mine, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been carrying you through every unticked line.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hand still on the page. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than whatever resolve you can find on the edge of a bed. What God does next with your life, and whether one more line in that book is ever written, is His to decide, and He is not asking you for a list this afternoon.
- Blank pages, you are not the record of my life. The psalm says our God is in the heavens and He has done whatever He pleased, and you are forty-eight sheets of paper, and He is a doing.
- Ledger I have been keeping against myself, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture never signed that account, so the balance I have been settling was never owed to God at all.
- Lord, You have already done whatever You pleased and I am inside it this afternoon with my hand flat on an old page. I thank You, because Your Spirit kept working through all four of those blank years, and I am putting the band back around this book without adding up.
