She opens every other door in that house without thinking about it.
That one she does not open, and she has stopped pretending it is about the vacuuming.
Behind it, on a stand, under a flat single bed sheet with a rose print, is a tenor pan. There are two more in the loft and one at her cousin's. There is a plastic crate of sticks with names on masking tape, and forty-one of those names belong to young people who are now adults, and eleven of them still message her at Christmas.
Six years she ran that group. Tuesday and Thursday, and Saturday in the summer, and the year of the competition when it was basically every night and her own children ate a great deal of takeaway.
Then the money stopped. That is the whole story and it is a boring one. A pot of funding was for three years and then it was for two more and then there was a letter that used the word unfortunately twice in the first paragraph. No wrongdoing. No scandal. A form, a panel, a decision made by people who have never heard forty-one teenagers get a run right at the same time.
She fought it for eight months. Then she stopped fighting it, and that was the part nobody saw, because stopping is quiet.
And the sentence that lives behind that door now is not I miss it. It is worse and it is more careful than that: if God still wanted it, the money would have come.
You know that sentence. It might not be funding. It might be a job that went, or a door that closed, or a health that failed at exactly the moment you were finally moving. Something outside you ended something good, and you have been quietly reading the ending as God changing His mind about you.
A panel changed its mind. God did not.
There are two things behind that spare room door and they have been welded together since the letter came. Let me get between them right now, because nothing else here can work until they separate.
The group ended. That is true and it is not a small thing. Six years, forty-one names on masking tape, and a Thursday that no longer exists. Grieving that is not weakness, it is proportion.
The purpose of God did not end, and it was never the same object as the funding. That is the whole message and I am putting it at the front rather than saving it. What cannot be stopped is His purpose. Not a grant cycle, not a panel, not a letter with the word unfortunately in it twice.
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?Numbers 23:19
Look at what that verse is doing, because it is being said in the middle of somebody trying to get God to change His mind for money. It is not a general comfort. It is a flat refusal: God does not say a thing and then quietly stop meaning it. He does not adjust His intentions when a budget adjusts. And nobody in Scripture ever discovered the will of God by reading a decision letter.
You are inside the purpose of a God who has never said one thing and done another, standing outside a door you cannot open, and three years of silence did not alter it by a syllable. That is what the written word says over you and not something warm I invented to cover an awkward gap, and the Holy Spirit who was in that room on all six years of Tuesdays is the evidence that none of it ever ran on a grant.
Watch what that does to the arithmetic. If the thing that keeps moving is His, then a closed funding stream is information about a panel, a budget and a year. It is not information about the mind of God towards you, and it never had the standing to become that.
The money was never the mechanism
Here is the second thing, and it lifts a weight rather than adding one.
Somewhere in the eight months of fighting it, you started treating provision as verdict. Money arriving meant yes, money stopping meant no, and once that is installed in a person it turns every budget line into a word from heaven. But God has never used a funding decision as a way of speaking to His children, and He is not going to start with you.
You have been carried through the whole three years since that letter, and the carrying was never paid for out of anybody's grant. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work in those forty-one young people rather than waiting for a pot to reopen.
There is something worth saying plainly here, because this is exactly the place a message like this could turn into a push and it is not going to. Nothing here is telling you to reapply. Nothing is telling you to fundraise, or to start it up in a smaller way, or to get the pan out of that room. If those instruments stay under a sheet until somebody else inherits them you have not stepped one inch outside the purpose of God, because getting inside it was never something you earned by running a group and staying inside it is not something you maintain by keeping one going.
And this is where your mouth comes in, because I am not leaving you with a nice idea to keep behind a door. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud. Not carried in the chest past a door for three years. And the thing in the way is not the panel, and it is not the letter. It is a sentence: if God still wanted it, the money would have come. That sentence has run your house unopposed because nobody has ever answered it out loud, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority standing in a hallway. Scripture gives you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in the volume or the certainty you managed.
If these three years have taken you somewhere darker than disappointment, and there are nights you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The hallway, that door, the light off in there.
Put both hands flat on the door. Actually do it, both palms on the wood, standing in your own hallway in the middle of the afternoon. You do not have to open it. Your hands are the point, not the handle.
Say out loud the thing that ended. Plain words, the flattest ones in the house. Not the version you give people who ask whether the group might come back.
Then say one sentence naming who does not change His mind. Not what you might do about the pans, because nothing here is asking you to do anything about the pans, and God has never required anybody to secure funding in order to remain inside His purpose. Just who does not change His mind. One sentence, then take your hands off the door.
You are not a woman God went off, you are a woman inside the purpose of One who has never said a thing and then failed to make it good. That is the word's account of your six years and your three years rather than my reading of them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been holding you outside that door the whole time.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands still on the door. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than however strong you feel in a hallway. What God does next with your life, and whether a single one of those pans is ever played again, is His to decide, and He is not asking you for a plan this afternoon.
- Closed funding, you do not speak for God over my life. Numbers says God is not a man that He should lie, and you are a decision made by a panel in a room, and He is a promise.
- Reading that says He changed His mind about me, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture asks whether He has spoken and will not make it good, and the answer in my house is that He always does.
- Lord, You have never said a thing and left it undone, and I am inside that purpose this afternoon with both hands on a door. I thank You, because Your Spirit was in that room for all six of those years, and I am taking my hands off this door carried rather than judged.
