He is wiping a counter that does not need wiping.
It has been wiped. He wiped it at nine when the last tray went out, and again at ten because his hands wanted something, and he is doing it now at twenty past eleven with a cloth that has gone cold, in a room that smells the way it has smelled every night for three years, which is the part he has not let himself think about yet.
The ovens are off. The trays are stacked and the flour bins are sealed and there is a box by the door with the good scales in it, wrapped in a towel.
The first time the shutters came down it was a landlord, and a rent review, and a lawyer's letter written by somebody who had never smelled the place at four in the morning. That one he could carry, because he could name the person who did it. He was angry for a year, and anger is a kind of fuel.
This time there is nobody to name. Fewer people came. Two other shops opened. The costs went one way and the customers went the other, and it happened slowly enough that he watched it happen and could not stop it, which is a specific kind of humiliation that people who have never run anything do not understand.
So he wipes the counter. And the sentence that has been sitting under his ribs for three weeks finally says itself out loud in an empty room, in his own voice, which is the only voice he actually believes: twice. Anyone can be unlucky once.
You know that sentence. You may not have a bakery. You may have a marriage you tried twice, or a course you began twice, or a life in a new country that has now collapsed under you for a second time. The specifics change. The arithmetic does not, and the arithmetic always arrives at you.
What closed tonight, and what did not
There are two things in that room and they have been glued together in your chest for three weeks. I want to put a knife between them before anything else, because until they come apart nothing here can reach you.
The shop closed. Twice, in your case. That is true, it is not in dispute, and I am not going to tell you it was secretly a success or that you will understand it later. It was three years of getting up at half past three, and it is over.
The purpose of God did not close, and it was never the same object as the shop. That is the entire message and I am putting it at the front rather than building to it. What cannot be stopped is His purpose. Not your trade, not your takings, not your stamina, not your record.
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.Isaiah 46:10
Read what God is actually claiming there, because it is both larger and quieter than people make it. He is not saying every plan a man makes will hold. He is saying His own counsel stands, and He says it in the middle of a chapter about carrying: about a God who has carried His people since they were in the womb and will carry them into old age. The counsel that stands belongs to the One doing the carrying, and you are the thing being carried, not the thing doing the standing.
You are inside a purpose of God tonight, in a cold room with a cloth in your hand, and that purpose did not lose one day of momentum in either of the two closings. The written word says it and I am only saying it after Him, and the Holy Spirit who has been at work in you through both of those years is the evidence that nothing was ever put on hold pending your success.
Notice what that does to the arithmetic. If the thing that keeps moving is His, then the number two is information about a market, a street, a landlord and a season. It is not information about your worth, and it never had the authority to become that.
No one appointed you to hold it up
Here is the second thing, and it takes weight off a back rather than putting more on it.
Somewhere in the first year you began to believe that a purpose of God is a weight a man carries, and that when he goes down it goes down under him. So both closings have read to you as a structural failure in the man. But you never had it on your shoulders. You are inside it. A man who thinks he is the pillar will read every crack in the ceiling as a crack in himself, and he will do it for the rest of his life if nobody tells him otherwise.
You have been carried the whole way through, including through the three weeks you have described to your wife as failing, and the carrying never once paused. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that working in you rather than waiting to see whether the shop survived.
And there is something worth saying very plainly, because this is exactly where a message like this could go wrong and will not. Nothing here is telling you to open a third time. Not next year, not ever. If you never open another shutter for the rest of your life you have not stepped one inch outside the purpose of God, because getting inside it was never a thing you earned by trading well and staying inside it is not a thing you maintain by trading again. That is the difference between a son and an employee, and a lot of good men have quietly been working the second arrangement while calling it faith.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not handing you a comforting idea to fold up in a towel with the scales. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing standing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not carried silently in the chest for three weeks. And the thing in the way is not the market, and it is not the two shops that opened, and it is certainly not the landlord from the first time. It is a sentence: anyone can be unlucky once. That sentence has run your inner life unopposed because no one has ever answered it out loud, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a man with authority at twenty past eleven at night. The word hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words; the power was never in how strongly you managed to mean them.
And if the closing has taken you somewhere darker than disappointment, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, a friend, a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving through a telephone.
So. The counter, the cold cloth, twenty past eleven.
Put both hands flat on it and then turn them over. Actually turn them, palms up, on the counter you are about to leave. It looks foolish and there is nobody there to see it, and the foolishness is part of why it works.
Say out loud what ended. Say it plainly, in the flattest words in your language. Not the version you gave your brother on the phone.
Then say one sentence naming what did not end. Not what comes next, because nothing here is promising you a third opening or asking you to want one, and God has never required a man to succeed at trade in order to remain inside His purpose. Just what did not end. One sentence, then stop.
You are not walking out of that door finished, you are walking out carried, which is exactly what was happening on every one of the mornings you got up at half past three believing it all rested on you. That is the word's account of those three years rather than mine, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been carrying you through both of them.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands still open on the counter. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a hope, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than the strength you have left at this hour. What God does next with your life, and whether you ever trade again, is His to decide, and He is not asking you for a plan tonight.
- Second closing, you are not the last word spoken over my life. Scripture says His counsel stands and He does all His pleasure, and you are a season in a street, and He is a counsel.
- Verdict that says twice makes a man, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. The word says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, so what I am is not the sum of two closings, it is the work of His hands.
- Lord, Your counsel stands and I am inside it tonight in an empty room. I thank You, because Your Spirit never set the work down while I was losing the shop, and I am opening my hands on this counter instead of counting.
