Ten past midnight. She has checked, twice, which is how she knows it is that specific kind of night.
The house is doing its cooling noises. The heating went off at eleven and there is a pipe upstairs that has ticked at this hour for nine years.
She is not worrying about a thing she could fix. That is what makes this particular kind of awake so unpleasant. She has been through it, methodically, in the dark, the way you do: the call she made, the form she sent, the person she asked, the second person she asked because of the first, the thing she chose not to say and now cannot decide whether that was wisdom or cowardice.
Every one of those is done. There is nothing on the list. The decision is being made by people in a room she will never be in, about a matter that will change the shape of the next ten years, and the only thing left is the waiting and the ticking pipe.
She has prayed. Of course she has prayed. She prayed the whole first fortnight with real fire and she has been praying since with the flat, worn, honest kind of praying that does not feel like anything.
The sentence arrives around a quarter past. Not God, do something. It is quieter and it is the one that keeps her awake: every door I could reach is shut, and I am not even in the building where they decide.
You know that ceiling. It might be a job, or a court, or a diagnosis, or a decision about somebody you love. The list is done and it is midnight and the whole thing sits with people you cannot influence, in a room you will not see.
What they were doing before anything moved
There is a midnight in Acts that most people know for the earthquake and remember wrongly, because the earthquake is not the part that helps you.
Two men are in the inner prison with their feet in stocks, which means they have been put in the part of the building furthest from any exit, deliberately, and secured. There is nothing on their list. There is nobody to appeal to at that hour. Every route out is not just closed, it is architectural.
And then:
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.Acts 16:26
All the doors. Not the door they were behind. Every door in that building, including doors belonging to prisoners who had nothing to do with any of it.
But look at the verse before, because that is the one for your ceiling. At midnight, they were praying and singing. They were not planning. They were not lying there running the list. They had no expectation of an earthquake, because nobody does, and they were doing something out loud in the dark in a place with no exits.
You are held by a God who opens doors that were never on your list, and He does it without waiting for you to find one. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing chosen for a woman at ten past midnight, and the Holy Spirit who is in you right now, awake, is the evidence that the reach of this was never limited to the doors you could get to.
Watch what that does to the arithmetic in the dark. If He opens all the doors, then a room you are not in is information about a process and a committee and other people's diaries. It is not the boundary of what can happen, and it never had the standing to become that.
What this page will not promise you
Here is the second thing, and it is why the rest of it will hold.
Nothing here will tell you the decision goes your way. Nobody knows. Nothing here will tell you an earthquake is coming, or name a week, or say that God is about to move because it has been long enough. That has been said to people lying awake, and the ones for whom nothing moved were left holding something worse than a shut door.
And notice what the two men in that prison did not have: any promise at all. They sang before anything happened, with no information, and the singing was not a technique that produced the earthquake. Paul would be the first to say so.
You have been carried through every night of this, including the flat worn praying that does not feel like anything. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit at work in a room you will never see rather than waiting for you to think of something.
There is something worth saying plainly. Nothing here is telling you to sing at midnight, or to have more faith about it, or to pray with more fire than you have. You have prayed with fire. You are past that and the flat kind counts exactly the same.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm thought and a ticking pipe. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud. Not run through methodically in the dark. And the thing in the way is not the committee. It is a sentence: every door I could reach is shut. Which is true, and which is the exact position the whole chapter was written about, and nobody has ever answered it out loud for you.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority lying in the dark. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how much fire you could find at midnight.
If this has taken you somewhere darker than dread, and there are nights when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The ceiling, the pipe, ten past midnight and no list left.
Turn both hands over on the covers. That is all. Palms up, lying exactly as this finds you, because nothing here is asking anybody to sit up or to sing.
Say out loud what is shut. Plain words, the flattest in the house. Say it to the ceiling. Not the reasonable version you gave your sister on the phone.
Then say one sentence naming who opens every door. Not what the decision will be, because nobody knows and nothing on this page will pretend, and God has never required anybody to reach a door in order for Him to open one. Just who opens. One sentence, then let your hands stay where they are.
You are not a woman shut out of the room where it is decided, you are a woman held by the One who opened every door in a building where two men had no exit at all. That is the word's account of this night rather than my comfortable version of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is awake in this house with you.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands still turned over. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than however much fire you have at midnight. What God does next, and what that room decides, is His to decide, and He has not promised you the outcome and neither has this page.
- Decision I am not in the room for, you are not the thing that holds my night. Acts says all the doors were opened and everyone's bands were loosed, and you are a committee and a diary and a date.
- Sentence that says every door I could reach is shut, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture has Him opening doors that were never on anybody's list, so the doors I can reach were never the boundary.
- Lord, You open every door and You have never waited for me to find one, and I am resting on that at midnight with my hands turned over on these covers. I thank You, because Your Spirit is awake in this house and in a room I will never see, and I am lying here without a list.
