Made A WayPsalm 107:16

Refused At The Same Counter

This message is for a woman refused a permit for the third time at the same counter by the same clerk, for a community kitchen that has been ready to open since April

The counter is at exactly the height where you cannot lean and cannot stand comfortably, and she is convinced that is deliberate and she knows that it is not.

Same clerk. Third time. He is not unpleasant. He has a lanyard and a particular way of turning a form around so that it faces you before he points at a box, and he has done that three times now, in April and in July and today.

Box 11. Something about the ventilation specification, which she has now had assessed twice by two different people who disagreed with each other, both in writing, both of which she has brought, in a plastic wallet.

He cannot accept either of them. He is not permitted to. She has stopped believing he is being difficult, which took until about halfway through the second visit and cost her some sleep.

Behind all of this is a kitchen. Ready since April. Two industrial pans that were donated and are sitting under sheets. A rota of eleven people who have all now rearranged their lives twice. And a street where a hot meal on a Saturday would matter to more households than anybody outside that street would guess.

The sentence arrives while she is putting the plastic wallet back in her bag. Not this system is broken. It is: there is a kitchen ready and a street waiting, and one box on one form is stronger than all of it.

You know that counter. It might be a permit, or a registration, or a certificate, or an inspection. Something good and ready is standing behind a requirement, and the person in front of you is not the enemy and cannot help, and the whole thing has a maddening politeness to it.

What He does to brass, and what came first

There is a psalm about several kinds of stuck people, and one stanza is about prisoners, and it has a line in it that is entirely physical.

He hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.Psalm 107:16

Brass gates and iron bars are not things a person negotiates. They are fixtures. They are what a system installs when it wants something to be final, and the psalm does not have anybody picking a lock or finding a loophole.

But look at the stanza around it, because the order matters. The people in it are described as sitting in darkness, bound in affliction, and then: they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them out of their distresses. Then the gates.

The crying came first, and it was not a strategy, and there is no suggestion anywhere in that psalm that the crying was what broke the brass.

You are somebody God hears from in front of a counter, and the breaking of gates has never once been on your side of the glass. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing chosen for a woman with a plastic wallet, and the Holy Spirit who has been with you since April is the evidence that the kitchen was never being held up by your paperwork.

Watch what that does to the arithmetic in that queue. If He breaks brass, then box 11 is information about a specification and two assessors who disagree. It is not stronger than what God is doing on that street, and it never had the standing to become that.

The clerk is not your enemy and this page will not make him one

Here is the second thing, and it is worth as much as the first.

He is a man on a wage with a lanyard and no discretion. He has almost certainly turned that form around for people in far worse situations than yours and gone home carrying it. And there is a version of the next year where he becomes the face of the whole thing, and you tell the story about him at dinner tables, and something in you hardens by about four percent.

That four percent would cost you more than the permit is worth.

You have been carried through all three of those visits, and the carrying was never routed through box 11. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit at work on that street rather than waiting for a ventilation specification to be signed.

And nothing here promises the permit. Not the fourth attempt, not ever. Nobody on this page knows, and a promise about a form is not one anybody was authorized to make. What is here is a God who is not held up by brass.

This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm thought and a plastic wallet. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud. Not carried politely to a counter three times. And the thing in the way is not the clerk and it is not the two assessors. It is a sentence: one box on one form is stronger than all of it. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.

You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority holding a bag in a queue. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how thorough your paperwork was.

If this has taken you somewhere darker than frustration, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.

The breakthrough

So. The counter, the form turned around, box 11 with a finger on it.

Put both hands flat on that counter, or on the table when you get home, whichever is possible without making a scene you do not want. Palms down, then turned over. Those hands have carried a plastic wallet since April.

Say out loud what was refused. Plain words, the flattest in the house, and no names, because that man has been protected from your own tongue for two visits and it is worth continuing.

Then say one sentence naming who breaks the gates. Not what happens on a fourth attempt, because nobody knows and nothing here will pretend, and God has never required a permit to be granted in order to feed a street. Just who breaks them. One sentence, then put the wallet away.

You are not a woman held up by a box on a form, you are a woman in front of a God who breaks brass and cuts iron and has never once needed a signature. That is the word's account of this morning rather than my comfortable version of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been on that street the whole time the pans have been under sheets.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these out loud with your hands still open. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than however thorough your file is. What God does next on that street, and whether that permit is ever granted, is His to decide, and He has not promised you a fourth answer and neither has this page.

  1. Third refusal at that counter, you do not decide what feeds this street. The psalm says He has broken the gates of brass and cut the bars of iron in sunder, and you are one box on one form.
  2. Four percent of hardening that starts with telling the story about a man in a lanyard, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture puts the breaking of brass on God's side of the glass, so nobody at that counter needs to become my enemy for me to be free.
  3. Lord, You break gates of brass and You have never needed anybody's signature, and I am standing on that this morning with my hands open. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been on that street every Saturday since April while the pans sat under sheets, and I am putting this wallet away without a grudge in it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
