The Crossing Was Canceled

The board flips over to the word and everybody makes the same noise at the same time, and then everybody starts moving except her.

She stays. Coat, rail, wind coming across sideways, and the water out there doing something that anybody who lives here can read at a glance and that she can read at a glance too, which is the annoying part. She knew at seven this morning. She came anyway.

Today was the day. Not a day that would have been nice. The day.

She has spent six weeks arranging it. Four other people rearranged things. There is a person on the other side who is not well and who has a window of being able to manage something like this, and windows of that kind do not reopen on request.

There is nobody to be angry at. That is the specific difficulty of weather. If a person had done this she would have somewhere to put it. Instead there is a low pressure system that formed over the Atlantic on Sunday and has done exactly what such things do.

The sentence arrives in the wind. Not it is not fair. It is: the one day that could not move is the one that got shut, and there is nobody to ask about it.

You know that harbor wall. It might be weather, or a train, or a body that chose today, or a flood, or an outage. Something with nobody behind it closed the only day that mattered, and because there is no person in it, all the weight has come to rest on you and on God, in that order.

The word the psalm uses for what God does

There is a line in a psalm written by somebody hemmed in on every side, and the picture in it is architectural rather than emotional.

And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.Psalm 31:8

A large room. Some translations say a broad place. The Hebrew is about space, width, the opposite of being pressed. And notice the pair the psalm sets up: being shut up into a hand on one side, and being set in a wide room on the other.

That is exactly the pair standing on that harbor wall with you. It feels like being shut into something small: one day, one weather system, one window on the other side. And the psalm answers that with a claim about space, made by somebody who was, at the time of writing, in real trouble and could not see any width anywhere.

You are set by God in a large room, and He did that without waiting for the weather to be right. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing chosen for a woman in the wind, and the Holy Spirit who was with you at seven this morning when you already knew is the evidence that you have not been shut up into anybody's hand.

Watch what that does to the arithmetic on the rail. If the setting is His and the room is wide, then a canceled crossing is information about a low pressure system and a harbor master who is right. It is not the shutting in of your life, and it never had the standing to become that.

Nobody here will explain the timing

Here is the second thing, and it is where a great deal of harm gets done at moments like this.

People will explain it. They will say God stopped you for a reason. That something on that boat was not right. That the timing was protection. And every one of those sentences turns a low pressure system into a personal message and quietly makes God the author of a woman on the other side missing her window.

Scripture does not do that. It says God wastes nothing and that no man can find out what He is doing, and it never once tells anybody why the wind was where it was on a Tuesday.

You have been carried through all six weeks of arranging and into this hour on this wall, and the carrying was not conditional on the crossing running. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit at work with the person on the other side today, without a boat.

There is something worth saying plainly, because this is exactly where a message like this could turn into a push and it will not. Nothing here is telling you to rebook, or to find another route, or to see the good in it. And nothing here promises the window on the other side reopens, because nobody can promise that and this page will not.

This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm thought and a cold rail. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud. Not held in a coat in the wind. And the thing in the way is not the weather and it is not the harbor master. It is a sentence: the one day that could not move is the one that got shut. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.

You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority standing on a wall in a gale. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how much of the six weeks you can point to.
