Planting At Seventy Nine

This message is for an older woman putting bulbs in at seventy nine, who has been told kindly and repeatedly that her season for beginning things is behind her

She is doing it kneeling on a folded towel, which is a compromise she made with herself about four years ago and does not discuss.

Forty bulbs. A netted bag from the same place she has bought them from since her husband was alive, and a trowel with the handle wrapped in tape.

They come up in March. That is the arithmetic that everybody around her has done and that nobody has said, and it is not a cruel arithmetic, it is just true: she is seventy-nine and these come up in March.

Her son said something in the summer about not taking on too much. Her daughter in law said something else, more carefully, about enjoying what she has already got. The woman from church who visits said, and meant it kindly, that this is a season for receiving rather than for starting things.

Every one of them loves her. That is the thing that makes it heavy. There is no unkindness anywhere in this and she has still had to carry it.

The sentence arrives with about the eleventh bulb. Not I might not see them. She is entirely at peace with that and has been for years. It is: everybody I love has quietly agreed that the part of my life where I begin things is over, and I do not know how to argue with it without sounding foolish.

You know that sentence. It might be bulbs, or a course, or a move, or a thing you want to take on. The people who love you have gently reclassified you as somebody who receives, and there is no way to object to it without proving their point.

What the psalm says happens there

There is a psalm about trees planted in a particular place, and the line about old age is not a compliment about longevity.

They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.Psalm 92:14

Still bring forth. The word is about production, about a tree that is still doing the thing a tree does, which is not the same as a tree that is still standing.

And read where those trees are planted, because that is the whole reason it works: in the house of the Lord, in His courts. It is not a psalm about vigorous people. It is about location. The fruit in old age comes from where the tree is, not from what the tree can manage.

You are planted somewhere that produces fruit in old age, and the producing has never once been powered by what your knees can do. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing chosen for a woman on a folded towel, and the Holy Spirit who is with you at the eleventh bulb is the evidence that nothing about you has been reclassified in heaven.

Watch what that does to the arithmetic everybody has done. If the fruit comes from where a tree is planted, then March is information about a calendar. It is not the end of what you put in the ground, and it never had the standing to become that.

Nobody here is going to promise you March

Here is the second thing, and it is the honesty this deserves.

Nothing on this page will tell you that you will see them come up. Nobody knows that, and at seventy-nine that peace was made a long time ago, more thoroughly than by most of the people worrying about it.

And nothing here will tell you to prove them wrong. There is no defiance being asked for, and nothing needs taking on to demonstrate anything to a daughter in law who loves you and is frightened.

What is here is smaller and better founded. Fruit in old age is a scriptural category. It is not a heroic exception granted to unusually energetic old people. It is what happens to a tree in a certain place.

You have been carried through every one of the years since your husband died, and the carrying has not been reclassified as a season of receiving. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit at work in you on a folded towel in October rather than assessing whether the timing is sensible.

This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm thought and a netted bag. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud. Not carried politely all summer. And the thing in the way is not your son and it is not the woman from church, all of whom love you. It is a sentence: the part of my life where I begin things is over. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.

You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority kneeling on a towel. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how many springs you have left.

If this has taken you somewhere darker than sadness, and there are days you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.

The breakthrough

So. The border, the folded towel, forty bulbs and eleven of them in.

Lay both hands flat in the soil. Actually do it, palms down, in the dirt, and stay there for a moment with nothing in your hands.

Say out loud the thing everybody has quietly agreed. Plain words, the flattest in the house. Say it as they would say it, kindly, because that is how it arrived.

Then say one sentence naming who brings forth in old age. Not whether you see March, because nobody knows and nothing here will pretend, and God has never required anybody to see a harvest in order to be a tree that bears. Just who brings forth. One sentence, then put the twelfth one in.

You are not a woman whose season for beginning is behind her, you are a tree planted in a place that bears fruit in old age, kneeling on a folded towel in October. That is the word's account of this afternoon rather than my kind version of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in this garden with you every year since your husband died.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these out loud with your hands still in the soil. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than however your knees are today. What God does next with your life, and whether you see a single one of these come up, is His to decide, and He has not promised you March and neither has this page.

  1. Season everybody says is behind me, you are not the end of what I put in the ground. The psalm says they shall still bring forth fruit in old age, and it says it about trees planted in His courts, and you are an arithmetic nobody has said out loud.
  2. Quiet agreement that my part of beginning things is over, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture makes the fruit come from where a tree is planted rather than from what it can manage, so nothing of mine has been reclassified.
  3. Lord, You bring forth fruit in old age and You never once made it depend on my knees, and I am kneeling on that this afternoon with both hands flat in the dirt. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been in this garden with me every year since he died, and I am putting the twelfth one in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
