She lit it because the overhead was too much. That is the level of decision she is currently able to make.
One candle, on a saucer, in the middle of a kitchen table with nothing else on it. Not for atmosphere. Because the actual light in the room was more than she could be under.
There is nothing wrong in the medical sense that anybody has been able to name, which she is aware sounds like a complaint and is really just a fact.
What there is, is this: she has no capacity for a second thing. Whatever the first thing of a day is, it takes all of it. Some days the first thing is a phone call and some days the first thing is the washing, and there is nothing after it.
People have suggested plans. Kind people, several of them, and every single plan has been sensible and small. Start with ten minutes. Just one thing a day. Write three things down.
Every one of those requires a capacity for a second thing.
The sentence at the table is not I am lazy. She stopped believing that about a year ago and it was a genuine relief. It is: everything on offer to me assumes I have something spare, and I do not, so there is nothing on offer to me.
You know that table. It might be a candle, or a dark room, or an hour of the evening where you sit and do not do anything. Every suggestion aimed at you assumes a margin, and you have not had a margin for a long time, and the suggestions have quietly become another thing you are failing.
The pace He actually walks at
There is a verse in the middle of the biggest chapter about God's power in the prophets, and it is about pace.
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.Isaiah 40:11
It sits inside a chapter about a God who measures the waters in the hollow of His hand and to whom nations are a drop in a bucket. And in the middle of all that scale, this: He gently leads the ones that cannot go fast.
Look at who sets the pace in that sentence. Not the flock. The ewes with young cannot travel at the speed of the flock, and any shepherd who moves at flock speed loses them, and so the whole group goes at the pace of the slowest.
That is not a concession. It is how the leading is done.
You are being led at a pace set by your capacity rather than by anybody else's plan, and God has never once required a margin from you. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing chosen for a woman with a candle on a saucer, and the Holy Spirit who is in that kitchen with you now is the evidence that nothing is waiting for you to have something spare.
Watch what that does to the arithmetic at the table. If the leading is paced to the slowest, then having no second thing is information about a year that nobody has been able to put a name to. It is not the price of being led, and it never had the standing to become that.
What this page is not handing you
Here is the second thing, and it is the reason this page is different from the ones that keep arriving.
Nothing here is a plan. There is no ten minutes. There is no one thing a day, no list of three, no small habit that builds. Every one of those would need the margin you do not have, and handing you one would be another kind person adding to the pile.
And nothing here is telling you to begin anything. If tomorrow is one thing again, and the day after that is one thing again, you have not stepped one inch outside what God is doing, and He is not waiting at the edge of your capacity for you to expand it.
You have been carried through every day of the last year, including the ones where the first thing was the whole of it, and the carrying did not require a spare hour. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit at work in you rather than checking whether you managed anything additional.
And it is worth saying, plainly, that a year of this without a name is still worth telling a doctor about, and that going back a second time when the first visit found nothing is not making a fuss.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm thought and a candle. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud, and speaking takes almost nothing. And the thing in the way is not the tiredness and it is not the people with their kind suggestions. It is a sentence: there is nothing on offer to me. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority sitting in a dark kitchen. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in what you can manage in a day.
If this has taken you somewhere darker than tiredness, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The kitchen, the candle on a saucer, the overhead light off.
Open both hands around it, at a safe distance, the way you would warm them. Actually do it. It costs nothing and it is a whole action.
Say out loud what you do not have. Plain words, the flattest in the house. Say that there is no second thing.
Then say one sentence naming who leads gently. Not what you are going to do tomorrow, because nothing here is asking you for tomorrow, and God has never required a margin before He would lead somebody. Just who leads. One sentence, then blow it out or leave it burning, whichever is less effort.
You are not a woman with nothing on offer to her, you are a woman being led at the pace of the slowest, on purpose, by a Shepherd who set it that way. That is the word's account of this year rather than my kind version of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in this kitchen through every one thing day.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands still open. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than whatever is left of today. What God does next with your life, and whether any of this eases, is His to decide, and He has not promised you a better year and neither has this page.
- Plan I cannot face, you are not the price of being led. Isaiah says He gently leads those that are with young, and the pace is set by the ones who cannot go fast, and you are ten minutes and a list of three.
- Sentence that says there is nothing on offer to me, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture has the whole flock moving at the speed of the slowest, so my lack of a margin was never the thing keeping me out.
- Lord, You lead gently and You set the pace to the ones who cannot go fast, and I am being led tonight with my hands open around one candle. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been in this kitchen through every day the first thing was the whole of it, and I am sitting here without a plan.
