The first one is fine. Everybody who has ever been in the water knows the first one is fine. You go under, you come up, you cough, you laugh.
It is the second one arriving before you have finished coughing that changes things.
By the third, the arithmetic in his chest has changed completely. He is not swimming any more, he is spending, and he can feel exactly how much is left, and there is no version of the next thirty seconds in which he gets to the surface and stays there under his own power.
That is the specific fear. Not drowning, exactly. It is the discovery, in the body, that getting his own head up is not a thing he can any longer arrange.
Now put that on land, because that is where you are reading this.
Four things in eleven months. The order does not matter and the details are yours. One would have been survivable. One with a gap after it, and time to cough, and somebody bringing food round, would have been a hard year that people talk about later. What has happened instead is a set: four of them, with no interval, each one arriving while you were still upside down from the last.
And what is different in you now is not sadness. It is that same discovery. You have understood, in your body rather than your thinking, that you are not going to be the one who gets his own head up.
The verse was written in the water
There is a psalm written by a man running for his life from his own son, which is about as bad a set as anybody has ever taken, and it contains three words that most people skip over on the way to something more famous.
But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.Psalm 3:3
The lifter up of mine head. It is a job title. He is not saying God helps him keep his chin up, which is a modern idea and a fairly weak one. He is naming a role and assigning it, and he assigns it entirely to God, in the middle of the worst week of his life, while still running.
He does not lift his own head anywhere in that psalm. He does not resolve to. He lies down and sleeps in the middle of it, which for a hunted man is the most extraordinary sentence in the whole thing, and he wakes up, and he says the Lord sustained him.
You are held by the One whose named job is lifting your head, and He has been doing it through all four of the things that came without a gap. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft reading I chose for a bad year, and the Holy Spirit who is in you right now is the evidence that the surfacing has never been your own work.
Watch what that does to the arithmetic in your chest. If the lifting is His, then four things in eleven months is information about a run of events that nobody chose and nobody could have spaced out differently. It is not information about your strength, and it never had the standing to become that.
No gap is not a character flaw
Here is the second thing, and it is the one that has been quietly doing the damage.
People recover between waves. That is how the stories work. Something hard happens, there is a valley, there is a rising, and the rising happens in the gap. There has been no gap. And because every story anybody tells has a gap in it, the absence of one has started to read as an absence in you.
It is not. A set is a set. Anybody in that water goes down.
You have been carried through all eleven of those months, and the carrying did not slow between the third thing and the fourth. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work in you rather than waiting on a calm patch to get involved.
There is something worth saying plainly, because this is exactly where a message like this could turn into a push and it will not. Nothing here is telling you to get up, or to hang on, or to find something to be grateful for. If the next thing knocks you down as thoroughly as the last four you have not stepped one inch outside the hand of God, because His lifting of your head was never a response to how well you were swimming.
And say this too, plainly: a body and a mind taking four hits in eleven months is something a doctor should hear about. That is not a failure of trust. Very often it is the shape the help takes.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm thought in cold water. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a man has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not held under and thought about. And the thing in the way is not the four events. It is a sentence: I am not going to be the one who gets my head up. You are right about that, and it was never the accusation you took it for, and nobody has ever said so out loud.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a man with any authority in the middle of a set. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how much air you had left.
If this has taken you somewhere darker than exhaustion, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The set, the fourth one, no air in it.
Put both hands flat on your own chest. Actually do it, palms on your sternum, wherever this finds you sitting or lying. That is where the arithmetic has been running, and your hands there say what your mouth has not.
Say out loud one of the things that knocked you down. One. Plain words, the flattest in the house. Not all four, because listing them is another way of counting.
Then say one sentence naming the lifter of your head. Not what you are going to do next, because nothing here is asking you to do anything next, and God has never required a man to surface under his own power in order to be lifted. Just who lifts. One sentence, then let your hands rest where they are.
You are not a man who has run out, you are a man whose head is lifted by God Himself, and He has been doing it through every one of the four with no gap in between. That is the word's account of your eleven months rather than mine, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been holding you up in the water.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands still on your chest. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than whatever air is left in you. What God does next with your life, and whether the next eleven months are calmer, is His to decide, and He is not asking you to swim.
- Set that keeps coming, you are not the thing that decides where my head is. The psalm names God the lifter up of my head, and you are four waves with no gap in them, and He is a lifter.
- Verdict that says a man with no gap has run out of something, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture says David slept in the middle of his and woke up sustained, so the absence of a gap was never an absence in me.
- Lord, Your word names You the lifter up of my head, and I am held by that tonight with both hands on my own chest. I thank You, because Your Spirit has kept me surfacing four times without me doing the surfacing, and I am breathing instead of swimming.
