He is forty minutes early, which is a thing he did deliberately, and he has been sitting in the car for thirty-five of them.
Third row of the car park, facing the wrong way on purpose so he cannot see the doors. The engine is off. The heater ran for a while and then he turned it off because the noise was making everything worse.
Phone face down on the passenger seat. Two messages on it, both kind. Both of them say no pressure and both of them mean it.
Three times. Signed off in the March of the first year, again in the October, and then for eleven weeks over last winter, and each time the same conversation with the same reasonable people, and each time a phased return with a plan on a form, and each time it held for a while and then it did not.
Today is the fourth first day.
He has thought through everything. He has done the exercises. He has, honestly, tried harder than anybody around him understands, which is the specific loneliness of this, because from the outside it looks like a man who keeps not managing.
And the sentence has been in the car with him for thirty-five minutes. Not I am unwell. It is: at some point a man has to be able to do this, and I cannot.
You know that sentence. It might not be a building. It might be a room, or a phone call, or a family gathering. There is a threshold somewhere, and you have been outside it before, and the going in has stopped being a thing you do and has become a thing you are measured by.
Every verb in that verse belongs to Him
There is one verse for this car park and it has four verbs in it, and not one of them is yours.
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.Psalm 40:2
He brought. He set. He established. Read the whole psalm and you find the man waited, and cried, and that is all he contributed. He did not climb. He did not find a foothold. He did not, at any point, demonstrate that a man has to be able to do this eventually.
That is a completely different account of a fourth first day than the one that has been running in your car all morning.
You are a man that God brings up, and the bringing up has never once been assigned to you. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing I picked for a difficult morning, and the Holy Spirit who is in you at this moment is the evidence that the lifting is His work and has been from the first March.
Watch what that does to the arithmetic. If the bringing up is His, then thirty-five minutes in a parked car is information about an illness that has a shape and a pattern and a medical name. It is not information about what kind of man you are, and it never had the standing to become that.
Nobody here is going to tell you to go in
Here is the second thing, and it is the reason this page exists.
Everything else in your life this morning has an opinion about the door. The form has an opinion. The phased return plan has an opinion. Your own head has the loudest opinion of all and it has been repeating it for half an hour.
There is no opinion about the door here. Not one. Whether you walk in at nine or drive home at nine is not what this is about, and nothing in what God says about you this morning moves depending on which one happens.
You have been carried through all three of those signings off, and the carrying did not weaken in the eleven weeks when nothing about you looked like it was improving. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work in you rather than sitting in the passenger seat waiting to see whether you manage it.
And say this plainly too: whatever is going on with your health is a thing for the people treating you, and telling them honestly how this morning has gone is not weakness and never was. God is not running a competing program. If part of what He is doing today is a conversation with a doctor rather than a walk through a door, that is not the lesser outcome.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm idea in a cold car. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a man has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not turned over silently in the third row of a car park. And the thing in the way is not the building, and it is not the two people who sent kind messages. It is a sentence: at some point a man has to be able to do this. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a man with any authority sitting in a parked car. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how convincing you sounded at half past eight.
If this has taken you somewhere darker than dread, and there are mornings when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The third row, the wrong way round, engine off.
Take both hands off the wheel and turn them over. Actually do it, palms up on your lap, in a car park, with people walking past who are not looking at you. Your hands have been gripping something since twenty past eight and they are going to stop for a minute.
Say out loud the thing that stopped. Plain words, the flattest ones in your language. Not the version in the half written message that never got sent.
Then say one sentence naming who brings a man up. Not what you are going to do about the door, because nothing here has an opinion about the door, and God has never required anybody to walk into a building in order to be lifted by Him. Just who brings a man up. One sentence, then put your hands back wherever you like.
You are not a man who cannot do this, you are a man God brings up out of pits and sets on rock, and He has done it three times already whether or not it looked like it from outside. That is the word's account of your two years rather than mine, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been doing the bringing up.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands still open. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than whatever is left of you in a parked car. What God does next with your life, and whether that door opens at nine or does not, is His to decide, and He is not asking you to prove anything this morning.
- Door I cannot open, you are not the test of what I am. The psalm says He brought me up and set my feet on a rock, and you are a set of hinges in a wall, and He is the One who lifts.
- Rule that says at some point a man has to be able to do this, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture gives the bringing up to God and the waiting to me, so the climbing was never on my list at all.
- Lord, You bring me up and You set my feet, and I am standing on that this morning with my hands off the wheel. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been lifting me through all three of these and I never saw one of them, and I am opening my hands rather than proving a point.
