Still Sent2 Corinthians 12:9

Third Box, Under the Tablecloths

This message is for A woman sitting on a plastic chair by the door of a village hall she used to run, because she can no longer lift a trestle table, needs to be sent again at the capacity she actually has this morning.

Half past eight on the Saturday, and the hall smells of dust off the folded trestles and the polish somebody put on last night. Bunting is coming out of a bin bag in a state nobody can account for. Two men are having the annual disagreement about whether the tables go the long way or the short way, which is a disagreement neither of them wants to win, because winning it would end it.

She is on a plastic chair by the door, out of the way of everybody's elbows.

That is the sentence. That is the whole thing, right there. Out of the way. For nineteen years she was the one on the other end of every one of those trestles, and she had a system for the bunting involving four bulldog clips that nobody else ever learned, and the whole morning ran off the top of her head and never once off a list. Then there was the operation, and then the second one, and now she can be upright for about ten minutes before her back informs her otherwise. So this morning she came anyway, because she cannot imagine not coming, and there is a plastic chair by the door and everybody is being extremely kind to her, and the kindness is somehow the exact shape of the ache.

Then a young woman in a hoodie with a toddler on her hip comes down the hall with her head going left and right, looking for something, and says to nobody in particular, has anybody seen the tape.

And from the chair by the door: third box, under the tablecloths.

Four seconds. That is the sum total of her contribution to the summer fair. She hears herself say it and she hears how small it sounds, and afterwards she sits there while the roll of tape goes up the hall from hand to hand and the bunting starts going along the beam, and she thinks the thought that has been circling her for eleven months, which is: I used to be the one who did things. Now I am somebody people are nice to.

Perhaps you know what that is like. The role that ended, the health that turned, the thing you gave twenty years to that carried on perfectly well without you. And the quiet, awful arithmetic that follows: if I cannot do what I did, what exactly am I for.

The sending never asked for your old capacity

Let me sit with the weight of it first, because it deserves better than being talked past.

When the thing you did comes to an end, something goes that is much bigger than the task. There is a shape a person gets used to being: the one who is rung, the one who knows, the one who stays behind and locks up. Losing that is a bereavement, and almost nobody treats it as one, because from the outside all that happened is that you stopped doing a job. And it is worse when nothing was your fault. Illness ends things. Age ends things. Other people's decisions end things. If a private suspicion is sitting with you that there must have been a way, put it down. That is not the reading of your life that heaven is working from.

Here is what is being worked from.

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."2 Corinthians 12:9

Paul asked three times for the thing to be taken away, and it was not taken away, and this is the answer he got. Read it carefully, because it is not a consolation prize. God does not say never mind, I will manage without you. He says the power comes to its full expression precisely where the capacity runs out. Not despite the weakness. In it.

So take this now, as a settled fact and not as a nice way of looking at things: you are sufficient for today, because His grace is, and it has already been given rather than promised. That is not my idea about your Saturday. It is what the word says, written down by a man who never got the thing he asked for three times, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an old letter and lays it across a plastic chair by a door.

And I want to be honest with you about what I am not saying. I am not telling you that what you have lost is coming back. I do not know that, nobody on a page knows that, and a site that promised it would be selling you something. What I am telling you is that the sending did not depend on it.

Watch how Jesus does this with Peter, on a beach, over breakfast, and notice the order. He tells him plainly that a day is coming when he will stretch out his hands and somebody else will dress him and carry him where he does not want to go. Diminished. Dependent. Carried. John 21:18. And then, in the very next breath, with that hanging in the air between them, Jesus says two words: follow me.

He does not say follow me until then. He does not say follow me while you are still useful. He puts the reduced capacity and the commission in the same conversation, thirty seconds apart, and never once suggests that the second is affected by the first.

Which means you are still sent, right now, exactly as you are this morning. Not the version of you from four years ago. This one, at this capacity, on this chair. Scripture puts the sending and the weakness side by side and refuses to let anybody separate them, and His Spirit is the one who makes that land on somebody who has been feeling ornamental since Christmas.

And notice how small the actual errands are in the book. A boy hands over his lunch. A servant girl in a foreign house mentions a prophet in one sentence. A man carries a jar of water across a city and never knows what he set up. Heaven has never had a minimum contribution, and nobody in Scripture is ever measured by output. The measuring is something we brought with us.

Now, the last thing, and it is the thing that turns knowing into having. Jesus put the smallest thing He could think of, a seed you could lose between two fingers, up against the largest thing on the horizon, and said the small one speaks and the large one moves. Matthew 17:20. So the four seconds are not too small to be the errand, and the sentence you are about to say over your own morning is not too small to be a declaration.

You have the standing to say it. The authority in it is delegated rather than native: you were put into Christ and Christ is in you, and His Spirit is what carries a sentence, not the volume of the voice or the strength of the body saying it.

The breakthrough

So let us take the measuring stick out of your hands. It was never yours and it has never been His.

Right now, as you read this, you are sent, and you are sent as you are today. Not reinstated later, not on hold. Sent. That is not me trying to cheer you up in a difficult year: it is what stands written when God tells Paul that His grace is enough and His power comes to completion in weakness, and it is His Spirit who makes an old sentence sit down next to somebody whose body has changed the terms.

And hear the whole of it. Nothing you do today is a reduced version of the calling, kept on as a courtesy. It is the calling. The purpose of God is what cannot be stopped here, and you are inside it. That does not depend on your energy this week, and it never once depended on the size of what you can lift.

If this season has gone further than sadness, if there are hours when being here at all feels like too much, please tell one living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line: 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number for where you live. Reaching for a person is not a step away from what God is doing. It has always been one of the ways He sends help.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting down if that is what today allows. The authority in them is delegated and not native: you were put into Christ and Christ was put into you, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while the Holy Spirit carries them. However He answers, and whatever He does or does not restore, that part belongs to Him and is not your work to secure.

  1. Chair by the door, you are not the edge of anything. God said His power is brought to completion in weakness and He has never once measured me by what I can lift, so you are a seat in the middle of the work. What I can do today is the errand, and I am running it.
  2. Fear that I am only ornamental now, I know your real name and it is not humility. Jesus told Peter to his face that his hands would be tied and other people would carry him, and He said follow me in the very next breath, and in His name I refuse your reading of my capacity. You do not get to decide what counts as work in this house.
  3. Lord Jesus, You send people at the size they actually are, and You have never sent anybody out to impress a hall. Your grace is enough for today, and today is the only day I have been handed. Third box, under the tablecloths, and I am glad to be the one who knows it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
