Her thumb is over the bin icon and it has been there for about nine seconds.
Two minutes and eleven seconds of audio. She has recorded it three times. The first one had a cough in it. The second one she stopped halfway because it sounded, to her, like somebody performing sincerity.
This one is fine. It is not clever. It says a verse, badly, and then something about a hard week and then it says the woman's name and something short.
She nearly deletes it every single Tuesday. That is not an exaggeration and she has stopped pretending it is.
Two years ago she ran things. Actually ran them: a rota of forty, a budget, three services a month, a phone that never stopped and that she was, if she is honest, slightly proud of never turning off.
Then the illness, which is a long word for a long thing, and there is no need to itemize it. What matters is the arithmetic: she has, on a good day, about two hours of usable clarity, and they are not reliably in the same part of the day, and they get spent on ordinary life like everybody else's do.
So: one voice note. One person. Tuesdays.
The sentence sits behind the thumb over the bin. Not this is not enough. It is more precise and more cutting: this is the leftovers of somebody who used to be useful, and sending it is a bit pathetic.
You know that thumb. It might be a message, or a card, or the one thing you can still do for somebody. Your contribution has shrunk to something small, and small feels like the residue of a life rather than a life, and you nearly delete it every time.
The word Paul chose next
There is a passage about a body with a lot of parts in it, and everybody knows the eye and the hand and nobody ever quotes the sentence that comes after them.
Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary.1 Corinthians 12:22
Read it as it is written. Paul does not say the feeble members are still loved, which would be kind and would leave the ranking intact. He does not say they are valuable in God's eyes, which is what people say to somebody who has become small. He says necessary.
Necessary is a word about function. It means the thing does not work without them.
And notice seem to be. The feebleness is in how they look. He is not disputing that they look that way, and he does not spend a word arguing that they are secretly strong. He says: they look feeble, they are necessary, both.
You are a necessary member of the body of Christ, and the necessity has never once been calculated from your output. That is what the written word says over you and not a soft framing chosen for a woman with her thumb over a bin icon, and the Holy Spirit who set you in the body is the evidence that your place there was not adjusted when your hours were.
Watch what that does to the arithmetic in your thumb. If the feeble members are necessary, then two hours of clarity a day is information about an illness with a long name. It is not the measure of what you are for, and it never had the standing to become that.
Nobody here will promise the hours come back
Here is the second thing, and it is why the first thing can be trusted.
Nothing on this page will tell you that your capacity returns. Nobody knows. Nothing here will say that God is going to restore what the illness took, or name a season, or tell you this is temporary, because that has been said to a great many people whose hours never came back, and it left them holding a promise nobody was authorized to make on top of everything else.
What is here does not depend on your hours. You are necessary now, at two hours, on a Tuesday, with a voice note you nearly deleted.
You have been carried through every month of the two years, and the carrying was not reduced along with your rota. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work through what you send rather than assessing whether it is a good use of you.
And nothing here is asking for two voice notes. Not two, not a group, not something a bit bigger now that you have read this. If next Tuesday there is no voice note at all you have not stepped one inch outside the body or the work.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a comforting thought and a phone. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud. Not weighed silently every Tuesday for two years. And the thing in the way is not the illness. It is a sentence: sending this is a bit pathetic. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority holding a phone on a sofa. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how much you can still do in a week.
If this has taken you somewhere darker than frustration, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The sofa, the phone, the thumb over the bin icon at nine seconds and counting.
Take your thumb off it and open that hand, palm up, beside the phone. Actually do it. It is a small movement and it is the exact size of movement being asked for here.
Say out loud the small thing you do. Plain words, the flattest in the house. Say it without the apology you always attach to it.
Then say one sentence naming who calls it necessary. Not what you might do next, because nothing here is asking for more, and God has never required a member of His body to justify their place by hours. Just who calls it necessary. One sentence, then send it.
You are not the leftovers of somebody useful, you are a necessary member of the body of Christ, and the necessity was set by Him rather than measured off your week. That is the word's account of your Tuesdays rather than my kind version of them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been carrying every one of those two minute notes.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hand still open. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than however much clarity you have today. What God does next with your life, and whether your hours ever come back, is His to decide, and He has not promised you that and neither has this page.
- Two minute voice note, you are not the leftovers of what I used to be. Paul says the members that seem more feeble are necessary, and necessary is a word about function, and you are two minutes and eleven seconds of audio.
- Verdict that says sending this is a bit pathetic, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture set my place in the body and never once recalculated it from my hours.
- Lord, You call the feeble members necessary and I am necessary this morning with my hand open beside a phone. I thank You, because Your Spirit has carried every one of these two minute notes for two years, and I am sending this one without an apology on it.
